In a notable push for global governance reform, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has voiced strong support for India’s inclusion as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York on Thursday, Starmer argued that the UNSC needs to be restructured to better reflect today’s global realities and ensure greater representation.
Starmer called for an expansion of this council, advocating for permanent seats for countries such as India, Brazil, Japan, and Germany, alongside enhanced representation for African nations.

French President Emmanuel Macron had previously advocated for UNSC reform, emphasizing the need to make the council more effective and representative. Macron proposed that India, Germany, Japan, and Brazil should be given permanent seats, along with two representatives from Africa chosen by the continent.

Earlier, during discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Wilmington, Delaware, US President Joe Biden also backed the idea of a reformed UNSC. Biden highlighted the importance of modernizing global institutions to reflect the current international landscape and support India’s role on the world stage.
The UNSC, established in 1945, currently consists of five permanent members—Russia, the UK, China, France, and the United States—who possess veto power over major resolutions. In addition, there are ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the UN General Assembly.
