New Delhi, 27th Sept. BJP’s Sundar Singh Tanwar was elected to the final seat of the 18-member Delhi Municipal Corporation’s Standing Committee on Friday, securing all 115 votes cast by his party’s councillors. Tanwar’s victory grants the BJP a majority on the committee, giving them control of 10 out of 18 seats, and the power to select the Chair.
Tanwar’s election, however, is expected to face legal challenges. His win came after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) boycotted the election, which took place during a special session summoned by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, representing the central government in Delhi.
The AAP, with 125 councillors, chose not to participate, citing procedural violations. Former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia called the election “illegal,” while Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal questioned the legitimacy of the session, arguing that the Mayor alone has the authority to call a sitting of the House.
The Congress, with nine councillors, also abstained from voting, effectively sealing Tanwar’s uncontested victory.
This contentious election is the latest development in the ongoing power struggle between the AAP-led Delhi government and the Lieutenant Governor’s office. The vacancy was created after BJP’s Kamaljeet Sehrawat resigned following her election to the Lok Sabha earlier this year.
As the BJP consolidates power over the Standing Committee, which controls key financial decisions of the municipal body, the political friction in the capital is expected to intensify.
