Raipur: The Chhattisgarh government has ramped up its crackdown on illegal religious conversions allegedly carried out by NGOs using foreign funding. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai announced on Friday that an investigation is underway to trace the funding sources of these organizations.

According to official sources, around 153 NGOs in the state are registered under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA), out of which 52 have reportedly declared their association with the Christian community. The activities of these NGOs, originally registered for health, education, and social work, have come under scrutiny for allegedly promoting religious conversions in tribal areas.
Central and state investigative agencies have begun examining the financial transactions and operations of these organizations. Reports suggest that many of these NGOs primarily operate in tribal regions, raising concerns over their intent and adherence to legal regulations.
Amid the ongoing investigation, the Chhattisgarh government is likely to introduce new legislation during the upcoming budget session to curb illegal conversions. Sources indicate that the proposed law may include stricter provisions to regulate foreign-funded NGOs and prevent religious conversions through coercion or financial inducements.
This move aligns with the BJP-led state government’s broader agenda to safeguard tribal traditions and prevent religious influences perceived to be in violation of existing laws. Similar actions against unauthorized conversions have been taken in other BJP-ruled states in recent years.
Authorities have assured that legitimate NGOs conducting social welfare activities will not be affected by the crackdown. However, officials maintain that any violations of the FCRA or existing anti-conversion laws will be met with stringent action.
The investigation continues, with further regulatory measures expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
