New Delhi: Former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi was on Sunday chosen as the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Delhi Assembly, marking a significant moment in the state’s political history. She is the first woman to hold the position in the Delhi legislature.

The decision was made during a legislative meeting of all Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs, which was attended by AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal and the party’s 22 legislators, including Atishi.
Key Challenges Ahead for Atishi
Atishi’s appointment comes at a time when the AAP faces a strong BJP-led government in Delhi after suffering a major electoral setback in the recent assembly elections.
The first session of the Delhi Assembly is set to begin on February 24 and will last three days. During this session, the ruling BJP government plans to table pending CAG reports assessing the performance of the previous AAP-led government.
BJP’s Return to Power in Delhi
Earlier this month, the BJP regained power in Delhi, securing a massive victory by winning 48 out of 70 assembly seats. The AAP managed to secure only 22 seats, while the Congress failed to win any.
In a significant blow to the AAP, party convener Arvind Kejriwal and several senior leaders, including Manish Sisodia, lost their seats in the election.
As the new Leader of Opposition, Atishi is expected to play a crucial role in holding the BJP government accountable, challenging its policies, and leading the AAP’s fightback in Delhi politics.
