New Delhi: Amid growing speculation of a rift between Shashi Tharoor and the Congress party, the senior leader and Lok Sabha MP from Kerala posted a cryptic message on X (formerly Twitter), quoting English poet Thomas Gray:

“Where ignorance is bliss, ’tis folly to be wise.”
Tharoor captioned the post as “Thought of the day,” sparking further speculation about his alleged differences with the Congress high command.

Reports of Discontent Over Kerala Article & Modi Praise
The speculation stems from Tharoor’s recent article, in which he praised Kerala’s entrepreneurial growth under the Left government, as well as his alleged appreciation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s US visit. Reports suggest that his statements did not sit well with Congress leadership, particularly the Kerala unit.
Clarifying his stance, Tharoor told ANI that his comments were based on factual reports rather than political bias.
“For 16 years, I have been in politics. My attitude has been that when somebody in the government, whether it’s our government or some other party’s government, does the right thing or does something well, one should acknowledge and praise it, and when they do something badly, one should criticise it,” he explained.
He further emphasized that his article highlighted Kerala’s economic growth based on the Global Startup Ecosystem Report 2024 rather than endorsing the Left government.
“There is MUCH more to be done. But when something good emerges, even if only in one area, it is petty not to acknowledge it,” he stated, urging critics to read the full article before forming opinions.
Tensions Over Tharoor’s Role in Congress?
Apart from the article controversy, reports indicate that Tharoor is unhappy with the Congress leadership, particularly over the lack of clarity regarding his role in the party.
A Times of India report, citing AICC sources, claimed that Tharoor was displeased with Rahul Gandhi’s reluctance to clearly define his position within the party structure. However, HT.com has not independently verified these claims.
Tharoor met Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday, reportedly following backlash from the Congress Kerala unit. While the meeting sparked further speculation, Tharoor later dismissed any talk of dissatisfaction, telling PTI that he had a “very good conversation” with Rahul Gandhi.
When asked about being sidelined in Congress, Tharoor responded:
“I have never made any complaint against anyone.”
Congress Leadership Yet to Comment
Despite the growing chatter about Tharoor’s alleged discontent with the Congress high command, the party has yet to issue any official statement on the matter.
With the 2024 Lok Sabha elections approaching, how Congress navigates internal disagreements and the role of senior leaders like Tharoor could be crucial in shaping its political strategy.
