India Sends 26 Tonnes of Humanitarian Aid to Honduras After Devastating Tropical Storm ‘SARA’

Published:

New Delhi: In a show of solidarity with Honduras, India dispatched 26 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the Central American nation on Sunday after it was severely affected by Tropical Storm SARA.

Announcing the relief mission, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated on X (formerly Twitter):

“A reliable partner for the Global South. India dispatched humanitarian assistance of 26 tonnes to Honduras in the wake of the recent Tropical Storm SARA.”

India’s Humanitarian Assistance to Honduras

The relief consignment comprises essential medical supplies and disaster relief materials, including:

  • Surgical supplies
  • Glucometers and oximeters
  • Gloves, syringes, and IV fluids
  • Blankets and sleeping mats
  • Hygiene kits

These supplies are aimed at addressing urgent medical and sanitary needs in Honduras, where healthcare services have been severely disrupted due to the storm’s impact.

Devastation Caused by Tropical Storm SARA

Tropical Storm SARA formed in November 2024 off the coast of Honduras, unleashing catastrophic flooding and landslides that left a trail of destruction. The storm:

  • Destroyed homes and livelihoods
  • Damaged public infrastructure
  • Displaced thousands of people

The aftermath has led to serious public health concerns, with safe access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene severely impacted. As a result, there has been a rise in waterborne diseases, respiratory illnesses, and overcrowding in shelters that lack basic facilities.

India’s Continued Support for Honduras

India and Honduras share strong diplomatic ties, with India frequently extending humanitarian and developmental assistance to the country.

During the COVID-19 crisis, India donated essential medicines and PPE kits to Honduras. Additionally, India has previously provided medical supplies (1998) and monetary aid (2005) during natural disasters.

With this latest humanitarian relief mission, India reaffirms its commitment to global cooperation and solidarity, particularly with nations in the Global South facing humanitarian crises.
