Odisha CM Assures Safety of Nepalese Students Amid KIIT Incident

Published:

Bhubaneswar- Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday assured that Nepalese students studying in the state will continue their education with full respect and dignity, following recent unrest at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT).

CM Majhi conveyed this commitment during a telephonic conversation with Nepal’s Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, according to an official statement. He assured Deuba that strict action would be taken against those responsible for the alleged suicide of a 20-year-old engineering student and the subsequent attack on Nepalese students at KIIT.

“The state government is closely monitoring the situation at KIIT and is committed to restoring the confidence of the students,” the CMO statement said. Deuba expressed satisfaction with the measures taken by the Odisha government and thanked CM Majhi for his intervention.

CM Majhi also met Nepal Embassy officials Sanjeev Das Sharma and Naveen Raj Adhikari at Lok Seva Bhawan, where he informed them that 10 individuals had been arrested in connection with the attack on Nepalese students. “Strict action will be taken against all involved, and the government has ensured a safe and conducive academic environment at KIIT,” he said.

The Nepalese officials acknowledged the prompt response of the Odisha government, stating that it had reassured Nepalese students and their guardians. They also highlighted the long-standing ties between Nepal and Odisha, expressing confidence that recent events would not strain bilateral relations.

Odisha Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja and Additional Chief Secretary to the CM, Nikunj Bihari Dhal, were present during the discussions. The embassy officials have been stationed in Bhubaneswar for the past five days following directives from Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli.
