New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday reprimanded the Assam government for pursuing a case against a man accused of transporting beef, stating that the state “should have better things to do” than chasing such cases.
A bench comprising Justices A S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan stayed the criminal proceedings against the accused and scheduled the next hearing for April 16.
The court’s remarks came after the state’s counsel informed that the meat sample had been sent for forensic testing. The counsel argued that the driver was unable to confirm the exact nature of the meat when intercepted.
“The state should have better things to do than running after these people,” the bench remarked, questioning how a person without expert knowledge could visually differentiate between various types of packaged raw meat.
The accused’s lawyer stated that his client was merely a warehouse owner who had transported the packaged meat. The court referred to Section 8 of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, noting that the provision could only be invoked if the accused knowingly transported beef.
The Assam government, however, claimed that the accused was involved in packaging and selling the meat. The bench said the matter required further hearing and adjourned it to April.
