Kochi, 25th Sept. Actor and former general secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA), Edavela Babu, has been arrested following questioning by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in connection with a rape case. The case was registered by the Ernakulam Town North police based on a complaint filed by a woman actor. The alleged incident took place at Babu’s Kaloor residence when the victim visited him to complete an AMMA membership form.
This arrest comes amidst a series of serious sexual assault and harassment allegations against prominent figures in the Malayalam film industry, including actors Jayasurya, Siddique, Mukesh, Maniyanpilla Raju, and director Ranjith. Actors such as Minu Muneer and Sonia Malhaar have also publicly accused several male colleagues of sexual abuse.
The controversy gained momentum following the public release of the Justice Hema Committee report, which documents the exploitation and harassment faced by women in the industry. The 235-page report, prepared in 2019 but withheld from public view until recently, reveals that the Malayalam film industry is largely controlled by 10-15 male producers, directors, and actors.
The report has shaken the foundations of AMMA, leading to the dissolution of its top panel, headed by actor Mohanlal as president. The panel stepped down, citing “moral responsibility” in response to the allegations. The SIT is now actively investigating the charges against various industry figures.
The scandal has cast a shadow over the Malayalam film industry, raising serious concerns about workplace safety and gender equity in the entertainment world.
