The UP Warriorz had a promising start to their WPL journey, making the playoffs in the inaugural 2023 season after finishing third in the league stage. However, their campaign ended in heartbreak with a heavy loss in the Eliminator against Mumbai Indians. The following season, inconsistencies crept in, leading to a fourth-place finish and missing out on the knockouts.

As they gear up for the third edition of the WPL, UP Warriorz have made some significant changes. With Deepti Sharma taking over as captain in the absence of Alyssa Healy, the team is looking for a fresh start. But will they find the right balance and finally challenge for the title? Let’s break down their Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats.

Strengths

World-Class Spin Attack: UP Warriorz boast one of the best spin departments in the tournament. The trio of Sophie Ecclestone, Deepti Sharma and Alana King has the potential to dominate, especially on Indian pitches that favour turn. Their ability to strangle batters in the middle overs could be a game-changer.

Experienced Overseas Stars: The squad features seasoned international performers like Tahlia McGrath, Chamari Athapaththu and Chinelle Henry, adding much-needed experience and versatility. Their presence provides stability and match-winning ability in crunch situations.

Exciting Young Indian Talents: Shweta Sehrawat, Vrinda Dinesh and Uma Chetry are three of India’s brightest young prospects. Vrinda, in particular, has a point to prove after an injury setback last season. If these youngsters fire, UPW could have an edge over their rivals.

Weaknesses

Pace Bowling Depth: While their spin attack is formidable, UPW lack a dependable pace unit. Anjali Sarvani and Saima Thakor are among the more experienced options, but the team still needs someone who can strike consistently in the powerplay. Chinelle Henry’s inclusion helps, but their pace attack remains a concern.

No Backup Wicketkeeper: With Healy unavailable, Uma Chetry is the only specialist wicketkeeper in the squad. If she struggles with form or fitness, the team will be left with limited options.

Unsettled Middle Order: UP Warriorz have power at the top, but their middle order remains untested. If early wickets fall, they could struggle to accelerate in the latter stages of the innings.

Opportunities

Deepti Sharma’s Captaincy Challenge: Leading a WPL team is a big responsibility. Deepti has a chance to make a statement as a captain. A successful season could establish her as a future leader for India.

Perfect Stage for Young Guns: Shweta Sehrawat, Vrinda Dinesh and Uma Chetry have the platform to shine. Vrinda, who was UPW’s most expensive signing last season, will be keen to justify her price tag after a stellar domestic campaign.

Utilising the Spin Strength: With spin likely to play a major role in the tournament, UPW’s trio of Ecclestone, Deepti and King could be their biggest asset. If they can exploit conditions well, they can dictate games.

Threats

Handling Pressure in Must-Win Games: UP Warriorz have yet to prove they can deliver in high-pressure knockout matches. If they reach the playoffs, overcoming past nerves will be key.

Overseas Selection Headache: With only four overseas slots available in the XI, the management will have tough calls to make between reinforcing their spin attack (Ecclestone, King) and strengthening their batting and pace options (McGrath, Henry).

Injury Concerns and Squad Depth: With limited cover in key areas like wicketkeeping and pace bowling, an untimely injury to a core player could disrupt their plans.

Predicted Playing XI: Vrinda Dinesh, Chamari Athapaththu, Shweta Sehrawat, Kiran Navgire, Grace Harris, Deepti Sharma (c), Uma Chetry (WK), Sophie Ecclestone, Alana King, Anjali Sarvani, Saima Thakor.

New recruitments: Arushi Goel (Rs 10 lakh), Kranti Goud (Rs 10 lakh), Alana King (Rs 30 lakh) and Chinelle Henry (replacement for Alyssa Healy).

Squad: Anjali Sarvani, Deepti Sharma (c), Grace Harris, Kiran Navgire, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Shweta Sehrawat, Sophie Ecclestone, Tahlia McGrath, Vrinda Dinesh, Saima Thakor, Poonam Khemnar, Gouher Sultana, Chamari Athapaththu, Uma Chetry, Arushi Goel, Kranti Goud, Chinelle Henry, and Alana King.

* Alyssa Healy pulled out due to a stress injury in her right foot.
