Thadou Tribe Urges Removal of ‘Any Kuki Tribes’ from Manipur’s ST List

Imphal, 11th Feb. The Thadou Inpi Manipur, a top body representing the Thadou tribe, has urged Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla to remove the category ‘Any Kuki Tribes’ from the state’s Scheduled Tribes (ST) list, citing concerns over Manipur’s integrity and national security.

In a memorandum submitted on Saturday, the Thadou Inpi Manipur stated that the term “Any Kuki Tribes” is vague and has been exploited for political and economic gains. The group claimed that the category was added to the ST list in 2003 under the Congress government and urged the Centre to act on a 2023 request by the Manipur government to remove it.

The memorandum asserted that ‘Any Kuki Tribes’ was initially a temporary classification for linguistic surveys in the 1950s but was later misused. The Thadou body argued that the Thadou community has a distinct identity, language, and culture, and accused certain Kuki militant groups of suppressing Thadou identity.

Additionally, the Thadou Inpi Manipur called for the inclusion of a clause in the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement to ensure respect for Thadou human rights, claiming persecution by Kuki militant groups. The organization also requested a meeting between Meitei and Thadou tribe leaders to foster peace.

The memorandum was signed by representatives from the Thadou Students’ Association, Thadou Chiefs’ Council, Thadou Elders’ Association, and Thadou Human Rights Advocacy.
