Indore, 24th Sept. At the All India Council of Mayors meeting held in Dewas, Pushyamitra Bhargav, Mayor of Indore, was unanimously elected as the President of the Madhya Pradesh Mayor Council. The election took place during a national executive conference of the All India Mayors’ Council.
Bhargav was warmly welcomed by the General Secretary of the organization, Umashankar Gupta, and the President of the Mayor Council of India, Madhuri Patel, who presented him with a bouquet.
Mayors Demand Equal Rights Across States
During the conference, mayors from various cities across India raised demands for uniform powers and privileges across the country. They pointed out the discrepancies in the rights and facilities granted to mayors in different states and called for uniformity, much like the “one nation, one election” policy. Additionally, they advocated for consistent tenure for mayors across states.
Madhuri Patel, President of the All India Mayor Council, emphasized that mayors should have funds similar to those allocated to MPs and MLAs. She added that although mayors are placed ahead of MPs and MLAs in the protocol list approved by the Governor, their privileges and facilities are often inadequate. She also called for security personnel for mayors and suggested that the mayor should be responsible for writing the performance report (CR) of commissioners to ensure smoother administrative functioning.
Demand for Equal Rights Presented to Central Government
General Secretary of the organization, and former minister Umashankar Gupta, stated that the demand for uniform mayoral powers nationwide will be presented to the central government. He highlighted the need for equal status for mayors across the country.
In addition to the election of Pushyamitra Bhargav as the President of the Madhya Pradesh Mayor Council, the conference also resolved to form mayor councils in all states. The event saw the participation of over ten mayors from Madhya Pradesh and various cities across the nation, including Delhi, Surat, Gandhinagar, Shimla, Raipur, Guwahati, Coimbatore, Kozhikode, Agra, Jaipur, Gangtok, Chandigarh, and Abohar.
Pratima Bagri, the Minister of Urban Administration and Development of Madhya Pradesh, attended as the chief guest. In her address, she emphasized the need for cleanliness in both practice and mindset, citing Indore as an exemplary model.
Dewas Mayor Geeta Durgesh Agrawal extended a warm welcome to all the distinguished guests at the conference.
