Prayagraj, 7th Feb. A fire broke out at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj on Friday, prompting a swift response from firefighting teams. The incident occurred in Sector 18 of the Maha Kumbh Nagar area, near Tulsi Chauraha on Old GT Road.
Inspector Yogesh Chaturvedi of Khak Chowk police station confirmed that the fire has been largely brought under control. No casualties have been reported so far. Several fire engines were deployed to contain the blaze.
This incident follows a similar fire last week when 15 tents caught fire in Prayagraj’s Chatnag Ghat area. Those tents were later found to be unauthorized.
The Maha Kumbh Mela, which began on January 13 and will continue until February 26, has already witnessed a massive turnout, with over 397.4 million devotees taking a holy dip at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also participated in the sacred ritual.
The event has seen other tragic incidents as well. On January 29, a stampede at Maha Kumbh led to 30 deaths and left 60 others injured. In response, the Uttar Pradesh government announced a compensation of ₹25 lakh for the families of the deceased. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has also ordered a judicial inquiry into the stampede.
The remaining key bathing dates at the Maha Kumbh include Maghi Purnima on February 12 and Maha Shivaratri on February 26. Authorities remain on high alert to ensure the safety of millions attending the religious gathering.
