The ruckus began when Opposition MPs raised slogans and demanded a discussion on the deportation of the Indian nationals. They voiced their concerns over the deportation of more than 100 individuals who were reportedly sent back to India on a US Air Force plane that landed in Amritsar on Wednesday.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla urged MPs to refrain from “planned disruptions” and let the House function smoothly. “This is a matter for the Ministry of External Affairs. The government has already taken cognizance of it. I request you to not resort to planned disruptions,” Birla said. He emphasized that the Question Hour, where members raise citizens’ issues, was an essential part of the parliamentary proceedings.
The chaos occurred while Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu was responding to queries from Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kirti Azad. Both Houses were in the middle of discussions on the Union Budget 2025-2026, which was presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday.
Opposition MPs, including Congress leaders Manickram Tagore, Gaurav Gogoi, and KC Venugopal, had moved adjournment notices seeking a debate on the deportation issue. They insisted that the matter required immediate attention and discussion in Parliament.
The incident comes on the heels of ongoing disruptions in the Budget session, including objections raised during Rahul Gandhi’s speech on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address and demands for a discussion on the recent Mahakumbh stampede tragedy.
The Budget session, which commenced on January 31 with President Droupadi Murmu’s inaugural address, will run until February 13. The session will reconvene on March 10 and continue until April 4.
