New Delhi, 5th Feb. Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh was briefed on Tuesday by National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Member Priyank Kanungo on the human rights concerns of terrorism-affected families in Jammu & Kashmir, with particular focus on the plight of the Kashmiri Pandits.
Kanungo expressed the NHRC’s commitment to safeguarding the rights of communities that have long endured hardship, such as the Kashmiri Pandits, who faced violence and displacement for decades but were denied justice by previous governments.
Dr. Singh highlighted that the welfare of the Kashmiri Pandit community has always been a priority under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He recalled the tragic history of the exodus, noting that the community was made refugees within their own country. He pointed to Modi’s over 35 visits to Jammu & Kashmir as a testament to the government’s commitment to the region’s progress, including efforts to reintegrate Kashmiri Pandit families and provide them with housing and support.
In addition to these welfare measures, Dr. Singh mentioned significant infrastructure developments aimed at improving connectivity and reducing emotional and physical distances within the region, such as expanded train networks and express corridors.
Emphasizing the importance of human rights in governance, Dr. Singh stated that under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, human rights governance has become a priority. He noted that the NHRC plays an active role in addressing human rights issues, and the government’s departments, including the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances, would collaborate with the NHRC to address citizens’ grievances.
Dr. Singh also discussed the need for sensitized government officers, equipped with both emotional intelligence and intellectual capability, to further human rights causes. He commended Priyank Kanungo’s appointment to the NHRC and his earlier role as Chairman of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), praising his dedication to human rights.
Concluding the meeting, Dr. Singh expressed hope that the NHRC would continue its efforts to safeguard the rights of every citizen in India. The NHRC, established in 1993, plays a key role in promoting and protecting human rights, as guaranteed by the Constitution of India.
