New Delhi, 5th Feb. As the global race for artificial intelligence (AI) intensifies, India is actively developing an extensive AI strategy aimed at creating a comprehensive AI stack. This includes the development of GPUs, AI models, and applications. Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that OpenAI, the company behind the popular ChatGPT, is keen to collaborate with India on this mission.
Following a meeting with OpenAI Co-founder and CEO Sam Altman in the national capital, Vaishnaw shared insights from their discussion on social media platform X. The Minister highlighted that Altman appreciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for AI, emphasizing the government’s goal to democratize technology for all.
“Had super cool discussion with @sama on our strategy of creating the entire AI stack – GPUs, model, and apps. Willing to collaborate with India on all three,” Vaishnaw posted. He added that Altman lauded PM Modi’s commitment to technology and the country’s forward-looking approach.
Altman, who is also the owner of ChatGPT, emphasized the significance of India as a major player in the AI market, noting that it is the company’s second-largest market globally. “AI models are still not cheap, but they are doable. India should be a leader there, of course,” he remarked, expressing admiration for India’s rapid embrace of AI technology and the thriving ecosystem surrounding it.
In line with the growing focus on AI, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the creation of three Centres of Excellence (CoEs) for AI in the Union Budget. With a budget allocation of Rs 500 crore, these centres will focus on advancing AI research, developing learning tools, and facilitating collaborations between educational institutions and industries. Sitharaman emphasized that India needs to lead in both AI research and its practical applications, a sentiment echoed by Altman.
Further developments in the AI sector include the launch of India’s own indigenous AI model within the next six months, backed by a robust computing facility. The IndiaAI mission aims to offer customized AI solutions tailored to India’s needs, including support for Indian languages. This initiative is expected to make AI technology more affordable and accessible, further boosting the country’s AI capabilities.
