A US military C-17 transport aircraft carrying several Indians deported for illegal immigration landed in Amritsar on Wednesday, the first such deportation to India under President Donald Trump’s second-term crackdown.
This deportation is part of a larger crackdown on illegal immigration under President Donald Trump’s second term.
Trump’s administration has introduced stricter immigration policies, leading to a significant rise in deportations, many involving individuals who entered the U.S. illegally and spent substantial amounts to do so.
Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, Punjab’s NRI Affairs Minister, expressed disappointment over the deportation, stating that these individuals had contributed to the U.S. economy and should have been granted permanent residency rather than being sent back.
Regarding the plane’s arrival in Amritsar, Punjab’s Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav confirmed that the matter had been discussed in a meeting. He mentioned that under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s direction, the state would receive the deportees and set up counters for them in Amritsar. The DGP added that the state is in contact with the central government and will provide updates as new information comes in.
