As voting for the Delhi Assembly election is underway on Wednesday, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing them of violating the Model Code of Conduct. The AAP claimed that BJP promotional material was found at several polling booths across the city, which the party argued was a breach of electoral guidelines.

In a post on X, the AAP expressed frustration, stating, “What is going on? There is election material openly displayed at the BJP booth… and the police are doing nothing. And the election officers are just watching.” The party also alleged that Delhi Police, under the Union Home Ministry, were acting as “mute spectators” to these violations.

In response, Delhi Police clarified that some promotional material had indeed been seized, but emphasized that it had been confiscated from booths set up by independent candidates and not BJP nominees.

Additionally, the AAP made further claims of electoral impropriety, with Greater Kailash MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj accusing the police of attempting to influence voters in the Chirag Delhi area. Speaking to the media, Bhardwaj alleged that police were placing barricades around polling booths in AAP strongholds, preventing voters from casting their ballots. “Why are barricades being put up? Which senior officer of Delhi Police has instructed this? This is being done to disturb poor voters,” he stated.

In response, South Delhi DCP Ankit Chauhan assured that the allegations would be investigated. “There is an exception for the elderly and those who cannot walk. For them, bringing their car inside is allowed. This rule is being implemented everywhere. We will investigate these concerns,” Chauhan said.

Voting for the 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly began this morning, with results expected on February 8. The 2015 and 2020 elections were dominated by the AAP, which secured 67 and 62 seats respectively. However, this time, the BJP is hopeful of making significant gains to challenge Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s bid for a third consecutive term in office.
