New Delhi, 3rd Feb. The Supreme Court has directed the government forensic laboratory, CFSL, to provide a report on the leaked audio tapes allegedly involving Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh. The tapes, which were cited in a petition by the Kuki Organisation for Human Rights Trust, claim to capture Singh’s voice instigating the violence in Manipur.
During today’s hearing, Justice PV Sanjay Kumar questioned whether he should recuse himself from the proceedings, noting that he had recently attended a dinner hosted by the Chief Minister. However, petitioner’s lawyer Prashant Bhushan responded, stating that recusal was unnecessary. “No, not one bit,” Bhushan affirmed before the two-judge bench, which also included Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna.
Bhushan also revealed that Truth Labs, India’s first independent forensic lab, had confirmed that 93% of the audio tapes matched Singh’s voice. Truth Labs, established in 2007, has been instrumental in forensic analysis and investigation.
The petition has brought renewed attention to the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur, as the state continues to grapple with tensions between the Kuki and Meitei communities.
