Hockey India’s commitment to growing the sport in the country has been evident over the past year. After successfully reviving the Hockey India League (HIL) with great fanfare, the governing body has now taken another bold step—offering free tickets for the FIH Hockey Pro League 2024-25 matches in Bhubaneswar.

The matches, scheduled from February 15 to 25 at the iconic Kalinga Hockey Stadium in Bhubaneswar, will witness top international teams competing in both the men’s and women’s divisions. With free entry, Hockey India is not only ensuring maximum crowd participation but also making the sport more accessible to a wider audience, fostering greater engagement among fans.

The revival of the HIL was a challenging task, but Hockey India pulled it off successfully. The league saw competitive hockey at its best, and packed stadiums proved that there is a strong and growing fan base for the sport in India. Now, with the FIH Pro League, the focus is on keeping up the momentum and reinforcing India’s reputation as a hockey powerhouse.

Hockey India President Dr Dilip Tirkey expressed his enthusiasm about this initiative, stating, “We are proud to host the FIH Pro League in Bhubaneswar, a city that has become synonymous with world-class hockey. By offering free tickets, we hope to create an electrifying atmosphere in the stadium, with fans from all walks of life coming together to celebrate the sport. This is a special opportunity for Odisha and India to showcase our passion for hockey on a global stage.”

This decision comes at a time when Indian hockey is witnessing a resurgence, with strong performances in international tournaments and increasing corporate interest. The success of the HIL, capped off by Shrachi Tigers’ well-earned victory, demonstrated the value of domestic leagues in improving player exposure and raising the sport’s overall profile in India.

While the HIL may not yet match the massive commercial success of the Indian Premier League (IPL), it has provided Indian hockey with a much-needed boost. The participation of top domestic and international players has given rising Indian stars a chance to hone their skills against the world’s best. Now, the FIH Pro League will further add to that exposure, helping both the men’s and women’s teams prepare for future global events.

Hockey India Secretary General Shri Bhola Nath Singh emphasised the long-term vision, saying, “Our goal is to inspire a new generation of hockey fans. By removing the ticket cost, we are ensuring that everyone can be part of this incredible sporting event. We encourage all hockey lovers to grab their free tickets and cheer for our teams.”

The upcoming Pro League matches will see India’s men’s team compete against England, Spain, Germany, and Ireland, while the women’s team will face off against Germany, England, Netherlands, and Spain. The tournament promises high-intensity action, and with free tickets, fans can experience world-class hockey up close.

Hockey India’s recent moves highlight its vision of strengthening the sport at both grassroots and elite levels. By ensuring full stadiums, increasing corporate sponsorships, and fostering talent through leagues and international exposure, Indian hockey is taking steady strides towards a brighter future. The journey may be long, but with each initiative, the game’s revival looks more promising than ever.
