Indian-origin NASA astronaut Sunita Williams has assumed command of the International Space Station (ISS) once again, marking her second stint in this prestigious role. The transition of leadership took place during an onboard ceremony where Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko handed over command to Williams.
This transition comes after Kononenko’s year-long mission aboard the station, as he returned to Earth along with fellow astronauts Tracy C. Dyson and Nikolai Chub.
Williams, who embarked on what was initially an eight-day mission, has seen her stay extended to over eight months due to technical issues with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft.
At the formal ceremony, Williams expressed her gratitude to her fellow crew members. “This Expedition 71 has taught all of us a lot,” she remarked. “The ability to adapt, you adopted Butch and me even though that was not part of the plan, you welcomed us as family.”
As commander, Williams’ primary responsibility will be ensuring the safety and efficiency of the ISS and its crew. Her previous command of the ISS was 12 years ago
