Cuttack, 23rd Sept. The Orissa High Court on Monday took suo motu cognizance of the recent alleged assault involving an army officer and his fiancée at a Bhubaneswar police station. The court expressed shock at the incident and has prohibited both mainstream and social media from disclosing the names and identities of the victims.
A Division Bench led by Chief Justice Chakradhari Saran Singh acknowledged the state government’s response so far but criticized the administration for failing to implement CCTV surveillance in all 650 police stations across the state. The court has ordered a senior police officer to report on the matter by October 8.
Describing the incident as “disturbing,” the court mandated the state government to inform it about the measures to be taken at the police station level to ensure the dignity and anonymity of complainants.
The court emphasized the importance of privacy, stating, “We have intentionally not disclosed the names of the persons who visited the police station on September 15 night to lodge a complaint but came out injured.” It noted that all concerns must refrain from publishing the identities of the individuals involved.
During the proceedings, Advocate General Pitambar Acharya informed the court that the state government has established a Judicial Commission of Enquiry led by former High Court Justice CR Dash.
He further reported that five police officers implicated in the incident have been suspended and seven individuals accused of harassing the complainants have been arrested.
