Mithali Raj — the name resonates far beyond the boundaries of women’s cricket. She isn’t just a cricketer; she’s a trailblazer, a symbol of perseverance, and an icon who redefined women’s cricket in India.
From becoming the highest run-scorer in women’s ODIs to leading the Indian team to historic heights, Mithali’s contributions have been monumental. She transformed the perception of the women’s game, inspiring millions of young girls to take up the sport and dream big.
At the Meet the Champions event organised by the Cricket Association of Bengal, U-15, U-19 and U-23 boys and girls were being celebrated for their stellar performances this season. The stage was set, and as Mithali walked in for a fireside chat with renowned sports journalist Boria Majumdar, the excitement was palpable. In a room filled with budding cricketers — many of whom idolise her — Mithali was asked a simple yet profound question: What makes a Mithali Raj?
True to her nature, Mithali’s response wasn’t about talent or luck. It was about something far more fundamental — discipline.

“I’ve been very disciplined in following routine. There were times when I disliked early mornings, but throughout my career, I was an early riser. From the beginning till the day I retired, it was something I did despite not liking it,” she shared. Her words struck a chord with every aspiring cricketer in the room. After all, who hasn’t struggled with the temptation to hit snooze on an alarm clock?
She went on to explain that discipline is what separated those who made it to the top from those who couldn’t sustain their journey. “There are many times you don’t want to get out of bed. Your body feels sore, but you still do. Discipline is something that has helped me all through my career, and that was what probably made me.”
With every word, Mithali reinforced a lesson often overlooked — talent alone isn’t enough. “Skill-wise, everybody differs. Mindset, attitude, everything you learn along the way. But if you’re not disciplined, you will probably not last. There are so many players who are gifted, but they cannot really sustain or play at the highest level if they don’t have discipline in them,” she emphasised.
As the young cricketers listened in awe, it became clear that the path to greatness is paved with relentless commitment and unwavering discipline. Mithali’s journey wasn’t just about her elegance with the bat or her countless records; it was about waking up early when she didn’t want to, pushing through when her body begged her to stop, and staying committed to a dream that demanded sacrifice.
While Mithali is undoubtedly a once-in-a-generation player, her legacy isn’t just in the runs she scored or the matches she won. It’s in the values she embodied. Discipline, she believes, is the key that could help these young players sitting in the audience today realise their dreams and aspirations, to one day bring glory not only to Bengal but to the nation.
Mithali Raj’s story is one of inspiration, resilience and a reminder that discipline is the foundation on which all great careers are built. And for those young cricketers at Eden Gardens, the lesson was loud and clear — wake up, show up and never give up.
And who knows? Maybe years down the line, one of these young stars will sit in a similar interview, looking back at their career and saying, “Now that I’m retired, I finally get up at 9:30-10,” just like Mithali said!
