Mumbai, 21st Jan. Kangana Ranaut recently addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding the release of her film Emergency, which was not screened in Punjab. In an Instagram video shared on Monday, the actress expressed her gratitude to fans for their overwhelming support for the film. However, she also shared her pain over the film’s exclusion from Punjab, a region where her movies have traditionally performed well. Ranaut lamented that while her films were once expected to do well in Punjab, Emergency was being denied a release in the state due to protests by various Sikh organizations and political groups.

In a heartfelt video shared on Instagram, Kangana thanked her fans for their overwhelming support for the film but spoke candidly about the ongoing struggles surrounding its release, especially in Punjab. “You have given so much love and respect to our film. We don’t have words to express our gratitude for the love,” she said. However, she continued, “Lekin mere dil mein abhi bhi kuch dard hai. Punjab. Industry mein aesa kaha jata tha ki Punjab mein meri filmein sabse acha perform karti hai. Aur aaj ek din hai jab Punjab mein meri film ko release tak nahi hone diya jaraha hai (I still have pain in my heart. Punjab. It was said in the industry that my films perform the best in Punjab. And today, my film isn’t even being allowed to release there).”

The actress went on to link the protests in Punjab with similar issues faced by the film in Canada and Britain, where protests also erupted in response to Emergency. Kangana described how “a few chosen ones” have been fanning the flames of protest, causing division. “Aese hi kuch humlein logo par woh Canada mein ya Britain mein bhi kiye jaraha hai. Kuch chote mote logo ne, kuch chuninda logo ne jo hai yeh aag lagayi huyi hai. Aur iss aag mein hum aur aap jal rahe hai (Some attacks are also taking place in Canada and Britain. A few people, some chosen ones, have started this fire. You and I are both burning in that fire),” she said.

Reflecting on the political content of the film, which portrays the tumultuous period of the Emergency declared by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the 1970s, Kangana emphasized the importance of watching the film to form an opinion. “Doston mere film, mere vichaar aur mera desh ke prati kya lagav hai woh iss film se pradarshit hota hai. Aap yeh film dekh ke khud nirnaye lijiye kya yeh film hume jodti hai ya todti hai (My principles and my attachment towards my country are proven through this film. You watch the film and decide if it breaks us or brings us together),” she concluded.

The Emergency controversy has extended beyond India. In the UK, a group of pro-Khalistan extremists attempted to stop the screening of the film in Harrow, London, as reported by ANI, a news agency citing British Hindus and Indian activists. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and other Sikh organizations in Punjab have staged protests across the state, including outside cinemas and multiplexes, pushing for a ban on the film.

Directed and starred by Kangana, Emergency chronicles one of the most contentious periods in Indian history, the 21 months of emergency rule between 1975 and 1977. The film delves into the political instability, civil rights violations, and the societal impact during this time. Alongside Kangana, Emergency also features Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, and the late Satish Kaushik.

Despite the turmoil, Kangana ended her video with gratitude, saying, “I won’t say anymore. Thank you,” as she shared the clip with the caption: “Immense gratitude for all the love for Emergency. In Cinemas now.”
