Ceasefire In Gaza Begins After Hamas Names Hostages To Be Released

Published:

After months of intense conflict, a ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel began on Sunday, following Hamas’ announcement of three hostages slated for release. The hostages—Romi Gonen, Emily Damari, and Doron Steinbrecher—are among 33 Israelis expected to be freed in this phase of the truce. In exchange, Israel will release around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, a move mediated by Qatar.

The ceasefire, originally scheduled earlier in the morning, was delayed until 11:15 a.m. local time (9:15 GMT). The postponement stemmed from Israel’s insistence on receiving a finalized list of hostages before halting military operations. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed the timing of the truce once the list was provided.

“Israel has received the list of the hostages who are due to be released today according to the framework. The security establishment is now checking the details,” Netanyahu’s office stated.

In the hours leading up to the truce, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) maintained strikes on Gaza, targeting what it described as militant strongholds. Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, spokesperson for the IDF, reiterated that military actions would only pause once Hamas met Israel’s conditions.

The ceasefire is set to last for 42 days, marking a temporary reprieve in a conflict that has devastated Gaza and strained regional stability. This phase focuses on facilitating the mutual exchange of hostages and prisoners while laying groundwork for future negotiations.
