Karnataka, 19th Jan. Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge confirmed on Sunday that Congress is preparing to organize a public rally on January 21 to mark the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi’s election as the party president. The event, under the slogan ‘Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan,’ was originally planned earlier but had to be postponed due to the passing of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. Kharge, speaking to ANI, stated that the rally, now rescheduled for January 21, aims to send a clear message to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre, particularly concerning the safeguarding of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s constitution.
Kharge, who serves as the rural development minister of Karnataka, also took the opportunity to criticize Union Home Minister Amit Shah, stressing that any attempts to misinterpret or deviate from Ambedkar’s constitution will not be tolerated. The rally will serve as a platform to express Congress’s firm stance against such attempts, with Kharge specifically referring to Shah’s controversial remarks in Parliament about Babasaheb Ambedkar.
In addition to the announcement regarding the rally, Kharge highlighted his recent discussions with Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan about the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). He made key submissions to relax guidelines and approvals under the act, including proposals to increase the MGNREGA person-day limit from 100 to 150 days, extend Central funding for operation and maintenance costs, and restructure the permissible works list to include essential maintenance tasks such as constructing compound walls for Angwanwadi and government buildings.
Meanwhile, Chouhan also held a meeting with Karnataka Agriculture Minister Chaluvaryaswamy to discuss the development of the state’s agricultural sector. Chouhan confirmed that Karnataka is seeking additional Central funds to support mechanization schemes aimed at modernizing agriculture in the state. The rally and these ongoing discussions underscore Congress’s commitment to pushing forward with both its political and policy agendas.
