New Delhi, 16 Jan: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto will embark on a state visit to India from January 25 to 26, at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. President Subianto will be the chief guest at India’s 76th Republic Day celebrations, marking a significant moment in bilateral relations.
This will be President Subianto’s first visit to India in his capacity as President, following his assumption of office in October 2024, as stated by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
Highlighting the deep-rooted ties between the two nations, the MEA noted, “India and Indonesia share warm and friendly ties spanning over millennia. As a Comprehensive Strategic Partner, Indonesia is an important pillar in India’s Act East Policy and our vision of the Indo-Pacific.”
The state visit offers an opportunity for both leaders to comprehensively review bilateral relations and discuss regional and global issues of mutual concern. The visit is particularly significant as it coincides with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Indonesia.
Prime Minister Modi and President Subianto last met on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 2024. During that meeting, the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and emphasized celebrating the milestone in diplomatic relations.
“Indonesia and India have long-standing and excellent relations. We deeply value this relationship and are committed to enhancing it across various sectors,” President Subianto stated, as per the Indonesian Cabinet Secretariat.
President Subianto, who previously served as Indonesia’s Defence Minister, took office in October 2024, alongside Vice President Gibran Rakabuming, the son of former President Joko Widodo. India was represented at the swearing-in ceremony by Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita.
Subianto’s connection with India dates back to his tenure as Defence Minister, during which he visited New Delhi in 2020. His upcoming visit signifies a continued commitment to deepening India-Indonesia relations across multiple sectors, further strengthening their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
