Impeached South Korean President Yoon Arrested Over Martial Law Fiasco

Published:

South Korea’s impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol was arrested on Wednesday, marking an unprecedented event as it is the first time a sitting president has been detained in the country.

This arrest follows a failed attempt earlier in the month and comes amid insurrection charges related to his declaration of a brief martial law last month.

Yoon’s arrest signals a significant intensification of the political unrest that has engulfed South Korea since his impeachment. The embattled leader is being investigated for allegedly abusing his power by declaring martial law to suppress opposition, an action that has drawn widespread condemnation both domestically and internationally.

More than 1,000 police officers and anti-corruption investigators arrived at the residence of South Korea’s impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol early Wednesday to carry out a historic arrest. The authorities were ready for resistance, as three blockades had been set up around the property to prevent their entry.
