Guwahati, 11th Jan. The body of another worker trapped inside a coal mine in Assam’s Dima Hasao district was recovered on Saturday, marking the second retrieval since rescue operations began. The miners were caught in the flooded quarry at Umrangsu on Monday, following a sudden water inflow.
An official confirmed that the deceased, 27-year-old Ligen Magar from Kalamati village in Dima Hasao, was found floating in the water-filled mine. Earlier, a body of a Nepalese worker was recovered on Wednesday. Rescue efforts, now in their sixth day, continue with assistance from the army, NDRF divers, and specialized dewatering machines provided by ONGC and Coal India.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed condolences, stating, “Rescue efforts continue with unwavering resolve. Tragically, another body was recovered this morning. Our hearts go out to the grieving families.”
The mine, abandoned 12 years ago and previously under Assam Mineral Development Corporation, was accessed by workers to extract coal for the first time. The leader of the workers has been arrested, and police investigations are ongoing.
Dewatering efforts have reduced water levels by 7 meters across four wells, with additional equipment brought from Nagpur to expedite operations. The chief minister urged against politicizing the incident, terming it a human tragedy.
Rescue operations remain ongoing as hope persists for any remaining trapped workers.
