Raipur, 6th Jan. Suresh Chandrakar, the prime accused in the murder of journalist Mukesh Chandrakar in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district, was arrested by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) from Hyderabad on Sunday night.

Chandrakar, a contractor by profession, had been on the run since the murder surfaced on January 3, 2025. The SIT was formed to probe the case and apprehended the fugitive after tracking him to Hyderabad, a police official confirmed.

Mukesh Chandrakar, a 33-year-old freelance journalist, went missing on January 1, and his body was discovered two days later in a septic tank on a property owned by Suresh Chandrakar in Bijapur town. The case is being investigated with a potential link to a report aired by NDTV on December 25, exposing alleged corruption in a road construction project in the region, which was allegedly connected to the accused contractor.

Suresh Chandrakar’s brothers, Ritesh and Dinesh, as well as supervisor Mahendra Ramteke, have already been arrested in connection with the murder. The motive behind the crime is speculated to be related to the journalist’s investigation into the construction project.

Chhattisgarh’s Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma claimed that Suresh Chandrakar was affiliated with the Congress, but the opposition has asserted that he recently joined the ruling BJP.
