35 Killed, 43 Injured After Car Rams Into Crowd In Southern China

Published:

A deadly car attack in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai on Monday evening claimed the lives of 35 people and left 43 others injured after a vehicle rammed into pedestrians at the Zhuhai Sports Centre.

Police identified the suspect as Fan, a 62-year-old who allegedly drove a small SUV through the sports center’s gate, hitting people who were exercising along the internal roads. Fan was later found in his vehicle, attempting to harm himself with a knife, according to police. He is currently in a coma due to self-inflicted injuries to his neck and other areas.

The initial police report on Monday only acknowledged that there were injuries; however, authorities provided an updated and detailed account of the casualties on Tuesday. Meanwhile, videos and photos of the incident were quickly removed from social media platforms, as is customary in sensitive cases.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for “all-out efforts” to treat the wounded and has demanded that the perpetrator be “punished in accordance with the law,” reported Xinhua, China’s official news agency.
