New Delhi, 22nd Oct. Eighty-five Indian nationals have been discharged from the Russian military, with ongoing efforts to secure the release of 20 more, according to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Monday. The issue is set to be addressed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, scheduled on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia.
During talks with Putin in Moscow in July, Modi had emphasized the urgent need for the early discharge of Indian nationals serving in the Russian Army. Misri noted that the Indian government is in “very close touch” with officials in Russia’s foreign and defense ministries regarding Indians “who were, illegally or otherwise, contracted into fighting in the Russian Army.”
The Prime Minister will depart for Kazan on Tuesday morning. Misri reported that while 85 people have returned from Russia, there have also been some tragic losses, with nine Indians having died while serving in the Russian military.
In August, the Russian embassy announced that Moscow and New Delhi were coordinating closely to expedite the “identification and discharge” of Indian nationals who had voluntarily joined the military and now wish to return home. Since April, Russia’s Ministry of Defense has ceased recruiting citizens from several foreign countries, including India, into military service.
